Shillong, July 30, 2026: Sonam Raghuvanshi, the prime accused in the high-profile Raja Raghuvanshi honeymoon murder case, surrendered before a Shillong trial court after the Supreme Court cancelled the bail that had earlier been granted to her. Her surrender marks a significant development in one of the country’s most closely watched criminal cases.

The Supreme Court had recently set aside the bail order, observing that the allegations against Sonam were serious and directing her to surrender before the trial court within the stipulated time. The apex court also noted that she could seek fresh bail at a later stage if the trial was not completed within the period indicated by the court.

Background of the Case

The case relates to the alleged murder of Raja Raghuvanshi, an Indore-based businessman, during his honeymoon trip to Meghalaya in 2025. Investigators allege that Raja was murdered as part of a criminal conspiracy, with Sonam Raghuvanshi being one of the principal accused. The sensational nature of the allegations and the subsequent investigation drew nationwide attention.

Earlier, Sonam had secured bail after a lower court found procedural deficiencies in the communication of the grounds of her arrest. However, the Meghalaya government challenged the order, leading to the matter reaching the Supreme Court.

Supreme Court’s Observations

While cancelling the bail, the Supreme Court emphasized that the gravity of the allegations and the stage of the trial required careful judicial consideration. The Court held that the earlier rejection of bail on merits and the commencement of the trial were significant factors in setting aside the bail order. At the same time, it clarified that Sonam would be free to seek fresh bail if the trial was not concluded within the prescribed period.

Surrender Before the Trial Court

Following the Supreme Court’s direction, Sonam appeared before the Shillong trial court and surrendered. She is expected to remain in judicial custody as the trial proceeds, unless a competent court grants her relief in future proceedings.

Trial Continues

The prosecution is continuing to present evidence before the trial court. The allegations against Sonam Raghuvanshi remain subject to judicial determination, and under Indian law, every accused person is presumed innocent unless proven guilty beyond reasonable doubt in a court of law. The outcome of the trial will ultimately determine criminal liability.
