New Delhi, October 16, 2026: Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) founder Abhijeet Dipke was detained by Delhi Police on Friday while heading towards Connaught Place’s Central Park to participate in the planned ‘Lehra Do Tiranga’ event. In a video shared by CJP, Dipke was heard questioning the police action, asking, “Maine abhi violation kaise kiya hai?” (How have I violated any order just now?).
Dipke Questions Police Action
According to reports, Dipke was detained shortly after leaving the accommodation where he was staying in Delhi. In the video circulated by CJP, he questioned the basis for the action, saying that he was alone and that the people accompanying him were members of the media.
Police personnel reportedly informed him that preventive action was being taken before escorting him into a police vehicle.
The detention came amid heightened security arrangements in central Delhi ahead of the planned gathering. The police action has brought renewed attention to the restrictions imposed on public demonstrations in the national capital.
Why Was the ‘Lehra Do Tiranga’ Event Planned?
The proposed event was organised amid protests by CJP against the detention of its leaders Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka earlier in October. The gathering was also presented as a symbolic protest over restrictions on demonstrations at Jantar Mantar.
CJP had called on supporters to participate in the event at Connaught Place’s Central Park. The proposed gathering was intended to draw attention to the party’s demands and its objections to the restrictions surrounding public protests in Delhi.
What Did Delhi Police Say?
Delhi Police cited a prohibitory order under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), which was in force in the area. According to reports, authorities had issued Dipke a notice advising against holding the proposed demonstration at Connaught Place.
Police concerns reportedly included public safety, traffic congestion, the movement of commuters and the potential impact on local traders and emergency services. Connaught Place was also described by authorities as not being a designated protest venue.
The restrictions formed the stated basis for the preventive action. However, Dipke’s questioning of the police during the detention highlighted the disagreement over how the restrictions were being enforced.
Neha Bora Also Detained
Dipke was not the only activist detained in connection with the planned event. Neha Bora, president of the All India Students’ Association (AISA), was also detained while reportedly heading towards Connaught Place from Mandi House.
The detentions came amid heightened security in the capital following earlier CJP demonstrations and police action against members of the organisation.
A Renewed Debate Over Protest Rights
The incident has once again raised questions about the balance between maintaining public order and protecting the right to peaceful assembly. While authorities can impose lawful restrictions to address public safety concerns, the implementation of such restrictions during political demonstrations often becomes a point of public debate.
Dipke’s question—“Maine abhi violation kaise kiya hai?”—has become the central focus of the reported encounter, reflecting his challenge to the police action at the time of detention.
The circumstances surrounding the detention, the restrictions on the proposed gathering and the competing concerns over public order and peaceful protest are likely to remain central to the discussion surrounding the incident.
