Chennai Weather: Rains Are Back In TN Capital; 24 Dists To Get Showers Today

Chennai, October 14: Rain is set to return to Chennai and several parts of Tamil Nadu on Wednesday, bringing relief from the prevailing heat. The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has forecast moderate rainfall, thunderstorms and lightning in isolated areas of the state, while heavy showers are likely in parts of southern Tamil Nadu.

According to the latest weather updates, Chennai is expected to experience generally cloudy skies, with a maximum temperature of around 36°C and a minimum of approximately 27°C. Residents may experience intermittent showers accompanied by thunder and lightning.

Chennai Weather Today: Rain and Thunderstorms Expected

The RMC has forecast moderate rain, thunderstorms and lightning in isolated parts of Chennai and neighbouring districts on October 14.

The areas included in the forecast are Chennai, Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu, Villupuram, Cuddalore, Thanjavur and Tiruvarur, along with Karaikal.

The return of rainfall comes as Tamil Nadu approaches the northeast monsoon season, which typically brings significant rainfall to Chennai and other coastal areas. Residents should be prepared for changing weather conditions, including periods of cloud cover, sunshine and sudden showers.

Heavy Rain Alert for Four Southern Districts

While moderate rain is expected in Chennai and surrounding areas, the weather department has forecast isolated heavy rainfall in four southern districts on Wednesday.

The districts under the heavy-rain forecast are:

  • Ramanathapuram
  • Thoothukudi
  • Tirunelveli
  • Kanniyakumari

Thunderstorms and lightning are also likely in connection with the rainfall activity. Residents in these districts have been advised to follow official weather updates and take precautions during periods of intense rain.

More Rain Expected Across Tamil Nadu on October 15

Rainfall activity is expected to continue on Thursday, October 15, with a wider area of Tamil Nadu likely to experience unsettled weather.

The RMC has forecast heavy rain, thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds reaching 40–50 kmph at isolated places in the Ghat areas of Tenkasi and Tirunelveli, as well as Kanniyakumari, Madurai, Dindigul, Tiruppur, Coimbatore, the Nilgiris, Erode, Salem, Namakkal, Karur, Tiruchirappalli, Perambalur, Ariyalur, Pudukkottai and Nagapattinam.

Thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds are expected to remain possible across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal through October 19.

What Is Causing the Rainfall?

According to the weather department, the current rainfall activity is associated with an upper-air cyclonic circulation over the southwest Bay of Bengal, off southern Sri Lanka, and an easterly trough extending towards the central Bay of Bengal.

These weather systems are contributing to cloud formation and rainfall across parts of Tamil Nadu, with further showers expected over the coming days. <Cite refs={[“turn280615search1″,”turn280615search4”]}/>

Residents Advised to Stay Alert

With thunderstorms and lightning expected in several areas, residents should monitor official forecasts and take precautions during heavy showers. Commuters in Chennai should also be prepared for wet roads and possible traffic disruption wherever rainfall becomes intense.

People in areas affected by thunderstorms should avoid open spaces and exposed locations during lightning activity. Those travelling in districts under heavy-rain warnings should check the latest weather advisories before setting out.

With rainfall expected to continue across parts of Tamil Nadu in the coming days, the evolving weather situation will remain important for residents, commuters and travellers throughout the state.
