7 Killed in Stampede-Like Incident At Ashokdham Temple in Bihar’s Lakhisarai Amid Sawan Sommar Rush

At least seven devotees were killed and several others injured in a stampede-like incident at the Ashokdham Temple in Lakhisarai, Bihar, on Monday morning as a large crowd gathered for prayers during the Sawan Somvar rush.

The incident occurred at the Shiva temple in Lakhisarai district amid an unusually heavy influx of devotees who had arrived to offer prayers and perform jalabhishek on the third Monday of the holy Sawan month.

Heavy Crowd at Ashokdham Temple

According to local administration officials, the number of devotees at the temple increased sharply in the early hours of Monday.

District Magistrate Shailendra Kumar said two trains arrived around 6:30–6:45 am, causing the crowd around the temple area to swell further. The sudden increase in footfall reportedly put additional pressure on the arrangements made for managing devotees.

Reports said thousands of devotees had gathered at the temple, with one local report estimating the crowd at around 50,000 people.

Barricades Collapsed as Crowd Surged

The district administration said a barricade on one side of the premises broke under the pressure of the crowd.

As devotees began falling over one another, panic spread through the area, resulting in the stampede-like situation.

Officials immediately rushed personnel to the affected area and began rescue and relief operations. The injured were taken to Lakhisarai Sadar Hospital for treatment.

Conflicting Reports About What Triggered the Panic

Authorities are still investigating the exact circumstances that led to the incident.

Some initial reports mentioned that an electricity pole may have fallen, triggering fears that people had been electrocuted. However, officials said the power supply was reportedly switched off and that the possibility of an electric shock had not been established.

SDPO Shivam Kumar said authorities would determine the precise cause only after completing their investigation.

The district administration has ordered a detailed investigation into the incident.

Incident During Sawan Somvar Rush

The tragedy occurred on a Monday during Sawan, a period when Shiva temples across India traditionally witness a major increase in devotees.

Ashokdham, also known as Indradamneshwar Mahadev Temple, is a prominent Shiva shrine in Lakhisarai. The temple complex is located in Balgudar village and attracts large numbers of devotees during major religious occasions.

The combination of the religious rush and the arrival of trains in the area appears to have contributed to the sudden increase in crowd density.

Seven Deaths Reported

Bihar police initially reported six deaths, while subsequent updates from local officials and news agencies put the death toll at seven. Several people were also injured in the incident.

Emergency teams and local authorities were deployed to manage the situation and assist those affected.

Officials have also begun efforts to establish the identities of those who died and inform their families.

Crowd Management Under Scrutiny

The incident has once again raised questions about crowd-management arrangements at religious sites during major festivals.

Large gatherings can quickly become dangerous when crowd density rises beyond the capacity of barricades, entry routes and exit points. The arrival of trains at a nearby station can further complicate crowd movement.

Authorities will now examine whether the existing arrangements were adequate for the number of devotees expected on Sawan Somvar and whether additional measures could have prevented the tragedy.

Investigation Underway

Officials have stressed that the precise cause of the incident will only be known after the investigation is completed.

The administration is examining several factors, including the sudden increase in the crowd, the collapse of barricades, the movement of devotees following the arrival of trains and reports surrounding a possible fallen electricity pole.

For now, the focus remains on treating the injured, identifying the victims and restoring order around the temple.

The Ashokdham Temple tragedy is a grim reminder of the importance of robust crowd-control measures during major religious gatherings, particularly when tens of thousands of devotees converge at a single location within a short period.
