Guruvayur, Kerala: The famed Guruvayur Sree Krishna Temple witnessed an extraordinary rush of wedding ceremonies on Sunday, with a record 416 couples tying the knot in just over seven hours—the highest number of marriages conducted at the temple on a single day.
The record-breaking event took place on the first Sunday of the Malayalam month of Chingam, considered an especially auspicious occasion for weddings. The ceremonies began at 4.10 am and continued until 12.45 pm, with brief interruptions for the temple’s regular rituals.
Previous Record Surpassed
The temple comfortably surpassed its previous single-day record of 334 weddings, set on September 8, 2024. A total of 442 marriages had been scheduled, including spot bookings, with 416 couples completing their wedding ceremonies during the day.
The scale of the event reflected the immense cultural and religious significance of Guruvayur as one of Kerala’s most popular destinations for Hindu marriages.
Six Mandapams Used for Wedding Rush
To manage the unprecedented number of ceremonies, the Guruvayur Devaswom made elaborate arrangements, with weddings conducted simultaneously across six designated mandapams.
The ceremonies were formally launched after Guruvayur Devaswom Board Chairman A V Gopinath lit the traditional ceremonial lamp at the first mandapam near the temple’s eastern entrance, or Kizhakke Nada.
Traditional mangalavadyam music accompanied the wedding ceremonies as couples exchanged vows in rapid succession throughout the morning.
More Than 60 Weddings Every Hour
Officials said the carefully coordinated arrangements enabled more than 60 marriages to be conducted every hour across the six mandapams. Around 137 weddings were reportedly held during the first two hours alone.
Wedding parties were issued tokens, while the number of people accompanying each couple near the mandapams was restricted to help prevent overcrowding and ensure the smooth movement of devotees.
Special Arrangements for Devotees
The temple authorities had anticipated an exceptionally heavy rush and introduced special crowd-management measures. Additional staff and officials were deployed to coordinate the ceremonies, regulate the movement of wedding parties and ensure that regular temple activities continued without major disruption.
The historic day has added another milestone to Guruvayur Temple’s long tradition as one of the most sought-after venues for Hindu weddings in Kerala.
With 416 couples getting married in just over seven hours, August 23, 2026, will now be remembered as the busiest wedding day in the history of Guruvayur Temple.
