New Delhi: Union Minister for Culture and Tourism Gajendra Singh Shekhawat has launched ‘Kaho Kalidas!’, a novel by author Yugul Joshi, at the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA) in New Delhi. The book explores the life, personality and literary world of the legendary classical Sanskrit poet Kalidasa.
The book launch and discussion was organised by the Kala Nidhi Division of IGNCA at the Samvet Auditorium. Published by Manjul Publishing House, the event brought together people from literature, culture and public life. IGNCA Chairman Ram Bahadur Rai presided over the programme, while NITI Aayog member Dr Joram Aniya attended as a special guest.
A Journey Into Kalidasa’s Life and Literature
One of the central themes of Kaho Kalidas! is the attempt to understand the man behind the timeless literary works. Since authentic historical details about Kalidasa’s personal life are limited, the novel draws inspiration from the emotions, ideas and subtle indications found throughout his writings.
The novel explores themes including love, separation, responsibility and nature, while giving particular attention to the women characters found in Kalidasa’s literary universe. The book seeks to offer readers a fresh perspective on one of India’s most celebrated poets and dramatists.
‘Women Are Not Merely Subjects of Beauty’
Addressing the gathering as the chief guest, Shekhawat reflected on the portrayal of women in Kalidasa’s works. He said that women in the poet’s writings are not simply presented as objects of beauty, but as embodiments of consciousness, dignity and love.
The Union Minister also described imagination as an essential and timeless aspect of human life. He said the book launch was more than a literary event, as it opened a dialogue with Kalidasa’s personality and creative world from a contemporary perspective.
Bringing Classical Literature Closer to Readers
The launch of Kaho Kalidas! highlights continuing efforts to make India’s classical literary heritage accessible and relevant to contemporary readers. By presenting Kalidasa’s life and personality through the form of a novel, Yugul Joshi attempts to bridge the distance between ancient literature and modern audiences.
