New Delhi: Heavy showers continued to batter Delhi and the National Capital Region, causing widespread waterlogging and major traffic disruptions across several parts of the city. The intense monsoon spell has affected daily commuters, with key roads, underpasses and low-lying areas witnessing significant accumulation of rainwater.
Several important stretches, including parts of Lutyens’ Delhi, Mathura Road, Connaught Place, Bhairon Marg, ITO and the Zakhira underpass, reported waterlogging. Traffic moved at a crawl on multiple routes as vehicles navigated flooded roads and commuters faced long delays.
Heavy Rain Brings City Traffic to a Crawl
The heavy downpour brought bumper-to-bumper traffic to several areas of the capital. Sangam Vihar, Sadar Bazar, Kamla Nagar and other neighbourhoods reported severe inundation, with visuals showing residents and commuters wading through deep water in some locations. Janakpuri was among the areas recording particularly heavy rainfall.
Rain-related disruption was also reported around major transport corridors, including stretches near Sarai Kale Khan and Mathura Road. Waterlogging at underpasses and other low-lying locations added to the difficulties faced by motorists during peak travel hours.
Weather Alert Issued as Rain Continues
The India Meteorological Department has issued weather alerts for Delhi as intense rainfall activity continues over the region. Reports indicate that further heavy showers could affect normal life and transportation across Delhi-NCR.
Authorities have urged residents to remain cautious while travelling, particularly through waterlogged stretches, and to allow extra time for their journeys.
Flight Operations Also Affected
The severe weather has also disrupted air travel. During the latest spell of heavy rain, multiple Delhi-bound flights were diverted, while delays and cancellations affected other services at Indira Gandhi International Airport.
Delhi-NCR Faces Widespread Disruption
The impact of the heavy rain has not been limited to Delhi. Parts of Gurugram, Noida, Ghaziabad and other NCR areas have also experienced flooding and serious traffic congestion. In Gurugram, authorities issued a work-from-home advisory for offices and educational institutions amid concerns over waterlogging and commuting difficulties.
The latest spell of rain has once again highlighted Delhi-NCR’s recurring monsoon challenges, with even a few hours of intense rainfall leading to flooded roads, traffic chaos and disruptions to daily life.
