Visakhapatnam, October 24, 2026: Five people, including a government schoolteacher, three workers and a vehicle driver, were killed in a tragic incident involving explosive material during road construction work in Andhra Pradesh’s Alluri Sitharama Raju district on Saturday.
The incident occurred near Pinakota village in Anantagiri mandal, along a ghat road where workers were carrying out road-widening operations. The explosion destroyed two vehicles and prompted an investigation by local police and district authorities.
According to initial reports, the explosive material consisted of gelatin sticks used for breaking rocks during construction. However, police have indicated that an accidental fire during vehicle refuelling may have triggered the incident. The exact sequence of events is yet to be established.
Teacher Among Five Victims
The deceased included Sunitha, a government schoolteacher who was reportedly travelling to school when the incident occurred. She taught at MPP School in Maddirebu village under Pinakota panchayat.
The other victims included three workers identified in media reports as Mani, Narayana Rao and Pavan Kumar, along with the vehicle’s driver. Authorities were continuing to verify details surrounding the incident.
The teacher’s death has added to the tragedy, as she was reportedly passing through the area during her regular journey to school when the explosion occurred.
How the Incident Happened
Road construction teams were undertaking work to widen the ghat road and remove rocks obstructing the route. Gelatin sticks had reportedly been brought to the site for blasting operations.
According to preliminary reports, a metal container carrying the explosive material was attached to a vehicle. One account suggests that a fire broke out while workers were filling the vehicle with diesel, potentially triggering the explosion.
The blast caused extensive damage to nearby vehicles and killed five people. Emergency personnel and police reached the scene after receiving information about the incident.
Police officials have cautioned that the cause should not be treated as final until the investigation establishes what happened.
Police Begin Investigation
Local police and revenue officials reached the location and initiated an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the deaths. Investigators are expected to examine the handling and transportation of the explosive material, the refuelling process and the safety measures in place at the construction site.
Authorities will also need to determine whether prescribed precautions were followed during the road-widening work and whether any lapses contributed to the tragedy.
The findings of the investigation could help establish responsibility and identify measures needed to prevent similar incidents at construction sites.
Safety Concerns at Road Construction Sites
The incident has once again drawn attention to the risks associated with handling explosive materials during infrastructure projects, particularly in hilly areas where blasting is sometimes required to clear rocks and widen roads.
Safe storage, authorised transportation, controlled blasting procedures and proper separation of workers and passing traffic are essential when such materials are used.
Construction agencies and contractors must also ensure that fuel-handling operations are carried out safely and that emergency procedures are in place.
Investigation Continues
The deaths of five people, including a teacher who was travelling to school, have cast a shadow over the road construction project in the region. The destruction of two vehicles highlights the severity of the incident.
Officials are continuing to investigate the cause of the explosion and the circumstances that led to the loss of life. Further details, including any findings regarding safety compliance or responsibility, are awaited.
The tragedy underscores the importance of strict safety enforcement wherever explosive materials and fuel are handled during road construction work.
