Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav has hit back at Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath after he challenged the opposition leader to contest the upcoming Assembly elections from Ayodhya, escalating the political battle between the BJP and the SP ahead of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh elections.
Yadav responded with the remark, “Pawan ka jhonka aayega, ahankar sab ud jayega” — suggesting that a gust of “Pawan” would sweep away arrogance. The statement was also a reference to SP leader Pawan Pandey, the party’s declared candidate from the Ayodhya Assembly constituency.
Yogi Adityanath Invites Akhilesh Yadav to Contest From Ayodhya
The political exchange intensified on Saturday, October 10, when Adityanath addressed a public meeting in Balrampur and responded to Yadav’s earlier challenge.
The chief minister invited the SP president to file his nomination from Ayodhya, saying he would also try his luck from the constituency. He called for a direct contest between the two leaders.
Adityanath also described Ayodhya as a centre of faith and devotion, arguing that his government had prioritised the city’s development. He criticised the previous SP government over its record on infrastructure, sanitation and governance.
Akhilesh Says Pawan Pandey Is Enough to Challenge BJP
Rather than accepting the chief minister’s invitation, Yadav highlighted his party’s choice of candidate for Ayodhya.
The SP chief questioned Adityanath’s authority to issue such a challenge and said the chief minister should first ensure that his own candidature was confirmed. He expressed confidence that Pawan Pandey could take on the BJP in the constituency.
Yadav also criticised what he described as the arrogance of the ruling establishment and alleged irregularities involving offerings and donations in Ayodhya. These were political allegations made by the SP leader, rather than established findings.
Ayodhya’s Political Significance Ahead of 2027 Elections
Ayodhya has become a major political battleground in Uttar Pradesh, particularly following the construction and inauguration of the Ram Temple. The BJP has highlighted the temple and development initiatives as central elements of its political message, while the SP has sought to challenge the ruling party on governance and social justice.
The SP’s victory in the Faizabad Lok Sabha constituency in the 2024 general election added further significance to the region’s electoral politics. SP candidate Awadhesh Prasad defeated BJP candidate Lallu Singh in that contest.
With the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections expected in early 2027, the exchange between Yadav and Adityanath signals an intensifying political contest. Whether the two leaders eventually face each other directly in Ayodhya remains uncertain.
