New Delhi: A late-night dispute over loud noise and alleged public nuisance turned fatal in southeast Delhi, where 54-year-old Manipuri musician and music teacher Chongtham Vikram Singh was allegedly assaulted by a group of men after objecting to the disturbance outside his home.
The incident took place late Sunday night in Kilokari village near Ashram, under the Sunlight Colony police station. Singh, a well-known guitarist and music teacher from Manipur, was reportedly disturbed by shouting and commotion involving workers associated with nearby dhabas and delivery staff.
According to police and reports, Singh went downstairs to ask the group to lower the noise. The disagreement allegedly escalated into a physical confrontation, during which he was attacked by several men.
Son Took Him To Hospital
After the assault, Singh’s son, Yaiphaba, rushed him to Holy Family Hospital for treatment. Despite medical efforts, the musician succumbed to his injuries.
Reports said Singh suffered serious injuries during the assault. Police are examining CCTV footage and other evidence to establish the precise sequence of events leading to his death.
Eight People Held
Delhi Police have apprehended eight people, including a minor, in connection with the incident. Several of those detained are reportedly associated with a local dhaba or delivery work.
A case has been registered under Section 103(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (murder) and Section 3(5) (common intention). The investigation is continuing, with police working to establish the individual roles of those allegedly involved.
Who Was Chongtham Vikram Singh?
Chongtham Vikram Singh was not only a music teacher but also a recognised figure in Manipur’s Western music scene. He had performed as a guitarist with bands including Phoenix, Ultra Vires and Eastern Dark.
After moving to Delhi, Singh spent years teaching music and building a life around his passion for the guitar. Reports said he had been living in the Kilokari area with his wife and son for more than a decade.
Singh also came from a prominent musical family. His mother, Chongtham Kamala, was a respected classical singer from Manipur.
Northeast Community Demands Justice
The death has triggered anger among members of Delhi’s Northeast community. Community organisations and activists gathered outside Sunlight Colony Police Station, demanding strict action against everyone found responsible.
The North East Students’ Society, Delhi University, also condemned the incident and called for a swift and impartial investigation.
Some members of the Northeast community have raised questions about whether the attack could have involved a racial motive. However, Delhi Police have said that no racial motive has been established so far, and that the circumstances and motive remain under investigation.
