Pakistan women’s cricket team captain Fatima Sana has been fined 10% of her match fee and handed one demerit point for her conduct during the Women’s T20 Asia Cup 2026 match against India in Dubai.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) confirmed the disciplinary action on September 7 following an incident involving Indian opener Shafali Verma during Pakistan’s clash against India on September 5.
What Happened Between Fatima Sana and Shafali Verma?
The incident took place during the second over of India’s chase. Fatima Sana dismissed Shafali Verma after the Indian batter chipped the ball back towards the bowler.
Following the dismissal, Sana made a gesture towards the pavilion while celebrating. The gesture was deemed inappropriate because it could disparage the dismissed batter or provoke an aggressive reaction.
The ICC ruled that Sana had breached Article 2.5 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, a Level 1 offence concerning language, actions or gestures directed at a batter following a dismissal.
Fatima Sana Admits the Offence
Sana admitted the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by the match referee, meaning no formal hearing was required.
The punishment consists of:
- 10% fine on her match fee
- One demerit point
- Her total demerit points now stand at two within a 24-month period.
Her previous demerit point came during a T20I against Ireland in Dublin on August 6, 2025.
Pakistan Suffered Heavy Defeat Against India
The disciplinary action came after a one-sided India-Pakistan contest in the Women’s Asia Cup.
Pakistan were bowled out for just 55 runs, while India chased down the target in only 8.4 overs, winning the match by seven wickets.
Ironically, Fatima Sana was one of Pakistan’s better performers with the ball. She took 3 wickets for 17 runs in three overs, including the dismissal of Shafali. However, Pakistan’s batting collapse left India with a very small target.
Why the ICC Took Action
The ICC’s Code of Conduct is designed to prevent players from using gestures or behaviour that could provoke opponents or undermine the spirit of the game.
In this case, the ICC specifically cited Article 2.5, which covers conduct that could disparage a batter or provoke an aggressive response after a dismissal.
Because this was Sana’s second offence within 24 months, the additional demerit point takes her disciplinary tally to two.
