New Delhi: A major building collapse in Delhi’s Satya Niketan area on Sunday afternoon triggered a massive rescue operation after several people were feared trapped beneath the debris. The five-storey building, reportedly being used as a boys’ paying guest accommodation, collapsed at around 1:30 pm on September 6.
Initial reports said six people had been rescued from the rubble and shifted to hospitals. As the operation progressed, officials reported that more people had been pulled out, while the death toll also rose.
Building Collapses During Basement Work
The building, known locally as Hostel Daze, reportedly had a basement and five upper floors and was located in a congested area near Delhi University’s South Campus.
According to reports, repair or renovation work was underway in the basement when the structure suddenly collapsed. Investigators are examining whether basement excavation or other construction activity may have weakened the building’s lower supports. The exact cause, however, has not yet been officially established.
Eyewitnesses described hearing a loud noise as the structure came down, sending debris across the narrow surrounding lanes.
Several People Feared Trapped
Rescue teams initially struggled to determine exactly how many people were inside the building when it collapsed.
Some people trapped beneath the rubble reportedly managed to contact others using their mobile phones, prompting rescuers to concentrate their efforts on specific sections of the debris. Reports from the site indicated that dozens could potentially have been inside the accommodation, although the exact number remained unclear.
The building’s location in a densely populated student area also made the rescue operation particularly challenging.
Six Rescued Initially, Casualty Figures Rise
In the initial phase of the operation, six people were rescued from the collapsed structure and taken to hospitals.
Later updates indicated that more victims had been brought out. The New Indian Express reported that eight people had been pulled from the debris, with one brought dead to hospital and another dying during treatment. Five others were reported to be in critical condition.
Other reports also put the number of confirmed deaths at two, underscoring how quickly the casualty figures changed as the rescue operation continued.
NDRF, Fire Services And Police Lead Rescue
Multiple emergency agencies were deployed at the site, including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Delhi Fire Service, police and medical teams.
Specialised search teams, including personnel equipped with rescue dogs, were involved in efforts to locate people beneath the rubble. Heavy machinery was also being used to carefully remove the collapsed structure while rescuers searched for survivors.
The operation was being conducted cautiously because rescuers faced the risk of further structural collapse.
Delhi Government Orders Probe
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said rescue operations were being carried out on a war footing and that all necessary assistance was being provided.
The government has also ordered an investigation into the incident. Officials are examining whether construction or renovation activity, including possible basement excavation, contributed to the collapse.
NDMC Vice-Chairperson Kuljeet Singh Chahal also pointed to possible unauthorised excavation work as one factor that investigators would need to examine. This remains a preliminary possibility and not a confirmed cause of the collapse.
Why The Incident Is Raising Concern
Satya Niketan is a major student accommodation hub near Delhi University’s South Campus, with numerous paying guest facilities, hostels and rental properties.
The collapse has therefore raised fresh questions about the structural safety of older buildings, basement modifications, construction permissions and enforcement of building regulations in densely populated parts of the national capital.
The authorities will need to establish whether the building had the necessary approvals, whether any unauthorised structural modifications were carried out and whether ongoing work compromised its stability.
Rescue Operation Continues
As emergency teams continue searching through the debris, authorities are working to establish the complete list of occupants and determine whether anyone else remains trapped.
The situation remains fluid, and the number of casualties and survivors may change as the search progresses.
The collapse has once again highlighted the dangers posed by structural modifications and construction activity in older buildings, particularly during the monsoon season when water accumulation and other environmental factors can add to existing structural vulnerabilities.
