Amravati, Maharashtra: In a devastating tragedy, three newborn babies died after a fire broke out in the neonatal care unit of the Amravati District Women’s Hospital in Maharashtra in the early hours of Monday.
According to initial reports, the fire started at around 3:15–3:30 am on the third floor of the government hospital after a ventilator reportedly sparked or exploded. At the time of the incident, 39 newborns were undergoing treatment in the Special Newborn Care Unit (SNCU)/NICU.
Emergency Evacuation After Fire Breaks Out
The fire triggered panic inside the neonatal unit, where several critically ill and premature babies were receiving specialised medical care. Doctors, nurses and other hospital staff immediately launched an emergency evacuation operation.
Medical equipment was disconnected as staff members rushed to move the infants away from the smoke-filled area. The prompt response helped evacuate many of the babies from the affected ward.
