A fresh political controversy erupted on Independence Day after a video from the Congress headquarters in New Delhi appeared to show senior party leaders making gestures during the rendition of Vande Mataram, the national song of India.
The footage, widely circulated on social media, shows Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson Sonia Gandhi, party president Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi during the party’s Independence Day programme. BJP leaders subsequently alleged that Sonia Gandhi and others were attempting to have the rendition stopped before it was completed.

According to reports, the complete version of Vande Mataram was being performed at the Congress headquarters during the Independence Day celebrations.
During the rendition, Sonia Gandhi and Kharge can be seen making gestures towards people around them. Rahul Gandhi is also seen making a similar gesture shortly afterwards. The visuals were interpreted by BJP leaders as an indication that the Congress leadership wanted the song to be stopped.

The Congress has rejected the allegation and offered a different explanation for Sonia Gandhi’s gestures.
According to the party’s clarification, Sonia Gandhi was asking for a chair for Mallikarjun Kharge, rather than asking organisers to stop Vande Mataram. Congress leaders have described the BJP’s interpretation of the video as misleading and politically motivated.
