Washington: An Indian-origin man has pleaded guilty in a federal court in New Jersey to knowingly accessing child sexual abuse material involving a prepubescent minor, according to the US Department of Justice.
The accused, Abhishek Vijaykumar, a resident of Hasbrouck Heights, New Jersey, admitted that he knowingly accessed the illegal material in March 2024. Investigators subsequently found more than 200 images on his electronic devices.
More Than 200 Images Found
According to US authorities, investigators examining Vijaykumar’s electronic devices discovered more than 200 images depicting child sexual abuse.
Authorities said the material included an image depicting the sexual abuse of a three-year-old child by an adult male. The investigation subsequently led to federal criminal proceedings against Vijaykumar.
The case involves child sexual abuse material (CSAM), a term used by law-enforcement agencies to describe material documenting or depicting the sexual exploitation or abuse of children.
Guilty Plea Entered in New Jersey
Vijaykumar entered his guilty plea in federal court on Wednesday, according to reports citing the Justice Department.
Assistant Attorney General A. Tysen Duva of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division said the guilty plea represented another step in efforts to combat the sexual exploitation of children.
The FBI’s Newark Field Office also said it would continue investigating cases involving the exploitation and abuse of children.
Faces Up to 20 Years in Federal Prison
Vijaykumar faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in federal prison for the offence.
However, the maximum possible sentence does not mean that he will necessarily receive 20 years. The final punishment will be determined by a federal district court judge after considering the US Sentencing Guidelines and other relevant statutory factors.
His sentencing is scheduled for January 6, 2027.
FBI Continues Fight Against Child Exploitation
The FBI and other federal agencies routinely investigate digital evidence in cases involving child sexual exploitation.
Authorities have emphasised that identifying individuals who access, possess or distribute CSAM remains a major law-enforcement priority.
The FBI’s Newark office described the guilty plea as a significant development while also highlighting the harm suffered by children depicted in such material.
What Happens Next?
With the guilty plea entered, the case will move to the sentencing stage. A federal judge will determine the sentence after reviewing the applicable guidelines and circumstances of the case.
Until sentencing, the 20-year figure is the statutory maximum, rather than a sentence already imposed.
