A fresh controversy erupted in the national capital after Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma of the Delhi High Court initiated contempt proceedings against former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal over remarks allegedly targeting the judiciary.
During the hearing, Justice Sharma firmly stated, “I won’t be scared,” while addressing submissions related to statements and allegations made against the court. The judge observed that attempts to undermine the dignity and authority of the judiciary cannot be tolerated and emphasized the importance of maintaining public confidence in judicial institutions.
The contempt action reportedly stems from comments linked to ongoing legal proceedings involving Kejriwal and members of the Aam Aadmi Party. The court took note of certain public statements that were viewed as potentially scandalising the judiciary and interfering with the administration of justice.
Justice Sharma remarked that judges perform their constitutional duties without fear or favour and cannot be pressured through public narratives or political commentary. The bench also noted that criticism of judgments is permissible within legal boundaries, but personal attacks or attempts to intimidate the judiciary cross the line into contempt.
Senior advocates appearing in the matter presented arguments regarding freedom of speech and political expression, while the court stressed that constitutional authorities and public figures carry additional responsibility when commenting on pending judicial proceedings.
The development has intensified political and legal debates, with supporters of Kejriwal describing the proceedings as excessive, while others argued that protecting the credibility of courts is essential for democracy.
