Adani Pledges ₹1 Lakh Crore Investment in Bengal, Calls State India’s Second Karmabhoomi

Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani on Thursday announced plans to invest more than ₹1 lakh crore in West Bengal by 2035, describing Bengal as the group’s potential “second karmabhoomi” in the East, after Mundra in Gujarat.

The announcement was made in Kolkata during the foundation-stone ceremony of the group’s proposed Adani Arogya Mandir, a major healthcare project in New Town.

₹1 Lakh Crore Investment Roadmap

The proposed investment will cover multiple sectors, including:

  • Ports and logistics
  • Power generation
  • Power transmission and distribution
  • Roads, bridges and ropeways
  • Green cement
  • Hyperscale data centres
  • Other infrastructure projects

Adani said Bengal’s geographical position gives it an important role connecting India’s industrial heartland and the Northeast with the Bay of Bengal and Southeast Asian markets.

Importantly, the ₹1 lakh crore figure is a future investment commitment through 2035, rather than money already invested or projects already completed. A detailed sector-wise allocation and individual project timelines have not yet been announced.

₹4,000-Crore Healthcare Project in Kolkata

The first major project highlighted was Adani Arogya Mandir, a proposed 2,000-bed not-for-profit medical institution in New Town.

The project is expected to involve an investment of more than ₹4,000 crore and will include:

  • A multi-speciality hospital
  • Medical college
  • Research facilities
  • Nursing and allied-health education
  • Advanced cancer care in its first phase
  • Research in genomics, precision medicine and AI-enabled healthcare

The project is planned across 51.75 acres and is expected to generate around 10,000 jobs across the healthcare ecosystem.

Half of the hospital’s beds—1,000 out of 2,000—are planned for economically weaker sections eligible under state and central health-insurance schemes.

Why Adani Called Bengal His Second ‘Karmabhoomi’

Adani compared Bengal’s proposed role within the group’s eastern expansion to Mundra in Gujarat, which he described as the group’s first karmabhoomi in the West.

He also said the group intends to contribute beyond infrastructure and industry. Its announced initiatives include support for the restoration of Writers’ Building, revitalisation of Kumartuli Ghat, and efforts to showcase Kolkata’s Durga Puja art and culture internationally.

The announcement therefore combines a large long-term industrial investment plan with healthcare and cultural projects, making West Bengal a significant proposed expansion base for the Adani Group through 2035.
