Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s economic advisor and noted economist Sanjeev Sanyal has emerged as a leading contender for the post of Finance Minister in the newly formed BJP government in West Bengal, according to multiple media reports.
Political speculation around Sanyal’s possible induction into the state cabinet has intensified after reports suggested that the BJP leadership is looking for an experienced economic strategist to manage Bengal’s finances. Sources indicate that he could potentially enter the Assembly through the Nandigram seat vacated by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari after he retained the Bhabanipur constituency.
Sanyal, a member of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister (EAC-PM), previously served as Principal Economic Adviser in the Union Finance Ministry and has represented India at several global economic forums, including the G20 and OECD meetings.
The buzz around his possible appointment gained further momentum after he attended the swearing-in ceremony of the new Bengal government in Kolkata earlier this month. However, the BJP has not yet made any official announcement regarding the Finance Ministry portfolio.
