A devastating bus fire on the Yamuna Expressway in Greater Noida claimed the lives of nine passengers late Wednesday night, September 23. The private AC sleeper bus was travelling from Delhi towards Mahoba in Uttar Pradesh when it caught fire near Jewar.
Bus carrying around 35 passengers caught fire
According to police, the bus was carrying approximately 30–35 passengers when the blaze erupted at around 11:30 pm near kilometre 33 of the Yamuna Expressway, within the Jewar police station area. Many passengers were asleep when the fire broke out.
The fire reportedly spread rapidly through the sleeper bus, leaving passengers with very little time to escape. Some passengers managed to get out through the windows, while others were trapped inside.
Nine passengers killed
Police confirmed that nine people died in the incident. Several other passengers suffered injuries and were taken to hospital for treatment.
The victims reportedly included one woman and eight men, according to an initial report from India Today.
Emergency teams from the fire department and Jewar police reached the location and brought the blaze under control.
Passengers reportedly noticed burning smell
Questions have emerged about what happened in the minutes before the fire engulfed the vehicle.
According to a police complaint cited by The Times of India, passengers noticed a burning smell and smoke coming from the driver’s cabin and alerted the driver and conductor. The complaint alleges that they were asked to stop and inspect the problem but did not immediately do so.
The same report says the driver and conductor were allegedly smoking inside the cabin and dismissed the passengers’ concerns. These allegations will form part of the investigation.
What caused the fire?
The exact cause has not yet been established.
Initial reports have pointed to a possible electrical fault involving the bus’s air-conditioning system. Another preliminary account suggested that a short circuit could have triggered the blaze. Officials have not yet announced a final finding.
A detailed forensic and technical investigation is expected to determine how the fire started and why it spread so quickly.
Driver and conductor questioned
Reports indicate that police have taken action against the driver and conductor as investigators examine whether safety procedures were followed before and during the fire.
Investigators are expected to examine the bus’s mechanical condition, electrical and AC systems, maintenance records, CCTV footage and statements from survivors.
Yogi Adityanath directs assistance
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed condolences to the families of those killed and directed officials to ensure appropriate medical treatment for the injured.
He also instructed officials to provide assistance to the families affected by the tragedy.
A tragedy raising fresh bus-safety questions
The incident has once again highlighted the risks associated with overnight sleeper buses, particularly when fires spread rapidly through enclosed passenger compartments.
The investigation will now focus on several key questions: What caused the fire? Were passengers’ warnings acted upon in time? Did the bus meet required safety standards? And could better emergency exits or fire-safety equipment have reduced the loss of life?
With the investigation still underway, authorities are expected to release more details about the victims, injured passengers and the precise cause of the fire.
