Chennai Super Kings have named former India fast bowler Zaheer Khan as their new head coach for IPL 2027, marking a major change in the franchise’s coaching setup after Stephen Fleming’s long association with the team.
Who is Zaheer Khan?
Zaheer Khan is one of India’s most accomplished left-arm fast bowlers. Born on October 7, 1978, he represented India across all three formats and built a career spanning more than a decade.

During the 2011 World Cup, Zaheer took 21 wickets, finishing as the tournament’s joint-highest wicket-taker.

Zaheer’s post-playing career has increasingly focused on team management, player development and strategy.
After retiring from international and IPL cricket, he joined Mumbai Indians, serving in cricket-management roles including Director of Cricket Operations and later Head of Global Development. He was associated with the franchise from 2018 to 2022.
He subsequently joined Lucknow Super Giants as a mentor in 2024 and remained with the franchise until 2025.
That experience gives Zaheer familiarity with both the tactical and developmental sides of an IPL franchise.
What makes the CSK appointment significant?
The CSK job represents Zaheer Khan’s first head-coaching position, according to reports following Monday’s announcement. His previous IPL responsibilities were primarily in cricket operations, development and mentoring.
The appointment also ends an extraordinary era for CSK.
Stephen Fleming had been the franchise’s head coach from 2009 to 2015 and again from 2018 to 2026. During his tenure, CSK won five IPL titles and became one of the competition’s most consistent teams.
There is a small discrepancy in how the tenure is being described: some reports refer to Fleming’s 16 years as coach, while others describe his overall CSK association as 18 years, because he first joined the franchise as a player in 2008.
Zaheer’s connection with MS Dhoni and CSK
Zaheer and MS Dhoni spent many years as important members of the Indian team, including during India’s 2011 World Cup campaign.
According to The Indian Express, Dhoni played a role in CSK’s selection process for Fleming’s successor, with the franchise eventually settling on Zaheer. CSK managing director Kasi Viswanathan said Zaheer’s IPL experience and understanding of player development were factors in the decision.
CSK owner Rupa Gurunath also highlighted Zaheer’s experience and his ability to nurture younger players when confirming the appointment.
What will Zaheer bring to CSK?
One of the clearest areas where Zaheer could have an influence is bowling development. His own career included success across Tests, ODIs and T20 cricket, while his subsequent roles at Mumbai Indians and Lucknow gave him experience working with younger players and franchise structures.
His challenge, however, is different from his previous roles. As head coach, he will be responsible for the wider team environment rather than just bowling or player-development operations.
CSK are entering this transition after missing the IPL playoffs for three consecutive seasons, according to reports. Zaheer’s first season as head coach will therefore be closely watched as the franchise begins a new phase.
