A remark made by a Tamil Nadu minister stating that the party was “not against Hindus, but against Hindutva” has triggered a sharp political controversy, with leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party strongly criticising the statement and accusing the ruling party of targeting Hindu sentiments.
The minister reportedly clarified that the government’s ideological opposition was directed towards “Hindutva politics” and not against followers of Hinduism as a religion. However, the comment quickly sparked backlash from BJP leaders, who alleged that such remarks were divisive and offensive to the Hindu community.
Several BJP leaders demanded an apology and accused the ruling establishment in Tamil Nadu of repeatedly making controversial statements related to religion and faith. Party members also claimed that the remark reflected an anti-Hindu mindset and attempted to polarise public opinion.
Meanwhile, leaders from the ruling side defended the minister’s statement, arguing that criticism of a political ideology should not be interpreted as criticism of a religion. Supporters maintained that the comments were aimed at differentiating between religious beliefs and political narratives associated with Hindutva.
The controversy has intensified political tensions in Tamil Nadu, where ideological battles between Dravidian parties and the BJP have frequently dominated public discourse. The issue continues to trend on social media, with political supporters from both sides engaging in heated debates over the minister’s remarks.
