A disturbing incident involving two Class 10 students in Jamui, Bihar, has triggered a police investigation after a video showing the alleged harassment and assault of the teenagers surfaced on social media. Police have arrested three suspects and formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to identify others allegedly involved.
What happened in Jamui?
According to police, the incident took place on the evening of September 19, 2026, when a teenage boy and girl were returning after attending coaching classes. They were reportedly travelling on a two-wheeler near the Mawara/Madwa Hill area when a group stopped them.
Videos circulated online appear to show members of the group surrounding the teenagers, assaulting the boy and allegedly behaving inappropriately with the girl. One clip appears to show a man grabbing and lifting the girl while the boy tries to intervene.
Police said the footage was apparently recorded by someone from the group and later circulated on social media.
Three suspects arrested
Jamui Police have arrested three people in connection with the case. Police have identified several other people visible in the video and are conducting searches for them. An SIT headed by a senior police officer has been constituted to investigate the incident and establish the individual roles of those involved.
There is some variation in early reports about the suspects’ ages. India Today reported that three minors were arrested, with two described as being between 17 and 18, while other reports said some suspects appeared to be minors and that their exact ages were still being verified. Their legal status therefore depends on official age verification.

Police have registered a case invoking provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, along with relevant provisions of criminal law. Because the victims are minors, authorities have also begun efforts to remove videos that could identify them from social-media platforms.
Police said several social-media accounts that circulated the footage have been identified for takedown action. Authorities have warned against sharing material that reveals the identities of the minor victims.
Victims identified by police
Jamui SP Bishwajeet Dayal said the victims were identified after police took cognisance of the viral video and subsequently recorded their statements. Police also reconstructed the location and sequence of events and used the footage to identify suspects.
The investigation is continuing, with police attempting to establish the identities of everyone who allegedly participated.
Why the case has drawn attention
The incident has attracted widespread attention because the alleged assault was captured on video and subsequently spread across social media. The National Commission for Women has taken suo motu cognisance and sought action from the Bihar DGP, including identification of the accused and a time-bound investigation.
The case has also become a subject of political debate because it occurred in the Jamui Assembly constituency represented by BJP MLA Shreyasi Singh. Political reactions have included demands for stronger action and questions about women’s and children’s safety.
