The Indian government has strongly rejected claims made by a former Japanese minister regarding negotiations over the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) project, stating that the remarks are “at considerable variance with facts.”
In an official response, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) emphasized that discussions between India and Japan on the ambitious bullet train project have always been conducted in a spirit of mutual trust, transparency, and respect. The ministry said recent comments made by the former Japanese official did not accurately reflect the nature or course of bilateral negotiations.
MEA Clarifies India’s Position
Responding to media reports, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said the former minister’s assertions were inconsistent with the factual record. He reiterated that India and Japan continue to enjoy a strong and strategic partnership, with infrastructure cooperation remaining one of its key pillars.
The spokesperson added that both governments have maintained regular dialogue throughout the implementation of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail project and continue to work closely to address challenges.
What Sparked the Controversy?
The controversy arose after a former Japanese minister reportedly claimed that negotiations with India over the bullet train project had been difficult and suggested that India had sought significant changes to the agreed terms.
India, however, dismissed these assertions, stressing that the comments did not accurately portray the discussions held between the two countries or the collaborative nature of the project.
Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train Project
The Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail project is India’s first bullet train corridor and is being developed with substantial financial and technical assistance from Japan. Despite facing delays due to land acquisition, the COVID-19 pandemic, and other implementation challenges, construction has gained momentum in recent years. Major civil works, bridge construction, and station development are currently underway across Gujarat and Maharashtra.
