The Election Commission of India has announced the launch of Phase III of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls across 16 states and 3 Union Territories, marking another major step in its nationwide voter list verification exercise.
The initiative aims to ensure that electoral rolls are accurate, updated, and free from errors such as duplicate entries, deceased voters, and incorrect details. The revision drive is part of the Commission’s ongoing efforts to strengthen the integrity of India’s electoral process.
However, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh have been excluded from this phase. The Election Commission has not provided specific reasons in the announcement, but such exclusions are often based on administrative timelines, earlier revision cycles, or region-specific electoral considerations.
The Special Intensive Revision process typically involves door-to-door verification by Booth Level Officers (BLOs), public submissions for additions and deletions, and scrutiny of voter records at multiple levels. Citizens are also given opportunities to correct their details, shift constituencies, or enroll as new voters.
The move is expected to impact millions of voters across the participating states and UTs, ensuring cleaner and more reliable electoral rolls ahead of upcoming elections in various regions.
