New Delhi: Heavy rainfall lashed several parts of the national capital on Thursday, disrupting normal life and prompting the Delhi Fire Services (DFS) to respond to more than 24 distress calls related to rain-induced emergencies. The downpour led to house collapses, waterlogging, traffic congestion, and falling trees across multiple areas of the city.
According to officials, the Delhi Fire Services received numerous emergency calls from different localities after intense rainfall caused structural damage to residential buildings. Several old and weakened structures reportedly suffered partial or complete collapses, while rescue teams were rushed to the affected locations to ensure the safety of residents.
The heavy showers also resulted in widespread waterlogging on major roads and low-lying areas, slowing vehicular movement during peak hours. Commuters faced long traffic jams as water accumulated on key stretches, while public transport services experienced delays in several parts of the city.
Emergency personnel were also deployed to clear uprooted trees and remove debris that obstructed roads. Authorities urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense rainfall and to stay away from damaged or unstable buildings until they are declared safe by officials.
Civic agencies have intensified monitoring of vulnerable areas, particularly neighborhoods with aging infrastructure, to prevent further incidents. Officials said pumps were deployed to drain waterlogged roads, while disaster response teams remained on standby to respond to additional emergencies if required.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast continued rainfall in parts of Delhi over the coming days, raising concerns about further disruption. Residents have been advised to monitor weather updates, exercise caution while driving, and report any emergencies such as building damage, fallen trees, or flooding to the appropriate authorities.
With the monsoon remaining active over the region, authorities are emphasizing preparedness and swift emergency response to minimize risks to life and property.
