US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping met at the White House on September 24, 2026, for talks covering trade, artificial intelligence, Taiwan and broader strategic relations. The meeting produced some agreements and continued dialogue, but several major differences remain unresolved.
1. Trade truce extended for another two months
The two sides agreed to extend their existing trade truce by two months, giving Washington and Beijing additional time to negotiate. The extension keeps tariffs from returning to previously much higher levels while talks continue.
However, major questions remain around US tariffs, Chinese purchases of American goods, rare-earth supplies and US technology restrictions.
2. Taiwan remains a major fault line
Taiwan was among the most sensitive issues discussed.
According to China’s Foreign Ministry, Xi urged Trump to oppose “Taiwan independence” and handle the Taiwan issue cautiously. The White House’s public account has not provided the same level of detail on the private Taiwan discussion.

3. AI becomes a central area of US-China competition
Artificial intelligence featured prominently in the talks.
Xi said the US and China should continue dialogue on AI, cooperate where possible and ensure that AI remains under human control. Trump has taken a different approach, emphasising continued American technological development and fewer restrictions on AI.
The two countries had already been discussing a possible mechanism for AI safety notifications and bilateral dialogue, including national-security-related AI incidents.
4. The broader strategic rivalry has not disappeared
Despite the warmer tone between the two leaders, Washington and Beijing continue to compete over technology, trade, military influence and global strategic issues.
Xi invoked the idea of avoiding the “Thucydides Trap”, arguing that competition between a rising and established power should not inevitably become confrontation. Both leaders also supported continuing communication between their governments.
5. Iran and other global crises were also discussed
The talks were not limited to US-China relations. Trump and Xi also discussed the Middle East, the Ukraine crisis and the Korean Peninsula, according to China’s Foreign Ministry.
The US has sought Chinese cooperation concerning Iran, while Beijing has maintained its own position on the conflict. No major breakthrough on the Iran issue was publicly announced following the Trump-Xi meeting.
What the summit means
The meeting keeps US-China negotiations alive and provides temporary breathing room on trade, while leaving fundamental disagreements over Taiwan, technology and strategic competition unresolved. The two-month trade extension therefore represents more of a continuation of negotiations than a comprehensive settlement.
The next areas to watch will be tariff negotiations, rare-earth shipments, Chinese purchases of US products, AI cooperation and restrictions on advanced technology, as well as any subsequent developments over Taiwan.
