Bishkek, August 31, 2026: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin shared a car ride in Bishkek on Monday following their bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit, in a fresh display of the close ties between the two leaders.
The two leaders travelled together to the opening ceremony of the VI World Nomad Games at Bishkek Arena. They used Putin’s official Aurus Senat limousine for the journey.
Modi Calls For End To Ukraine War
The informal car journey came shortly after Modi delivered a strong message on the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict during his meeting with Putin.
Modi said India supports all efforts aimed at achieving peace and called for a shift from an “endless war” towards an end to hostilities. He stressed that every day the conflict continues represents a setback for humanity, while progress towards peace offers hope to the world.
India has consistently maintained that dialogue and diplomacy are the way forward in resolving the Ukraine conflict.
Putin Responds To Modi’s Message
Putin acknowledged Modi’s comments during the meeting and indicated that Russia was moving along the path discussed. The Kremlin later said Putin briefed Modi about the latest developments in what Moscow continues to call its “special military operation” in Ukraine.
However, Moscow continues to insist that any settlement must address its conditions for ending the conflict, while Ukraine has rejected those demands.
Strong India-Russia Ties Remain In Focus
Apart from Ukraine, Modi and Putin discussed the broader India-Russia Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership.
Their talks covered bilateral cooperation and global developments, with economic ties, energy and other strategic areas remaining important elements of the relationship. Modi also highlighted the progress achieved between the two countries in recent years.
India remains an important buyer of Russian oil, making the relationship particularly significant amid continuing Western sanctions on Moscow.
‘Car Diplomacy’ Returns
The Bishkek ride was not the first time Modi and Putin have travelled together in the same vehicle.
The two leaders also shared a car during the 2025 SCO Summit in Tianjin, China, and Putin travelled with Modi during his India visit in December 2025. Their informal interactions inside vehicles have subsequently been described as a form of “car diplomacy.”
Why The Meeting Matters
The Modi-Putin meeting comes at a crucial moment in global diplomacy, with the Russia-Ukraine war continuing to dominate international discussions.
For India, maintaining close strategic relations with Russia while simultaneously advocating dialogue and an end to the conflict reflects New Delhi’s broader diplomatic approach of engaging with all major powers.
Modi’s latest appeal also reinforces India’s position that the conflict should ultimately be resolved through diplomacy and peaceful negotiations rather than continued military confrontation.
The shared car ride may have offered a striking visual of India-Russia camaraderie, but Modi’s central diplomatic message in Bishkek was clear: the world needs to move from prolonged conflict towards peace and an end to hostilities.
