Haldwani, Uttarakhand: An FIR has been registered against Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi over his remarks about a controversial “purification” ritual held at the Ramlila Ground in Haldwani, Uttarakhand.
The case was registered at Haldwani Kotwali police station following a complaint by Amit Kumar, a member of the Valmiki community and an office-bearer of the Shri Ram Sena Dharmarth Seva Nyas. Police said the complaint alleged that Gandhi gave a caste-based interpretation to the religious ritual and hurt community sentiments.
What Is the Haldwani Purification Row?
The controversy began after a Congress programme addressed by party president Mallikarjun Kharge at Haldwani’s Ramlila Ground on August 8.
A few days later, on August 11, a group reportedly carried out a cleaning drive and a “shuddhikaran yajna” at the venue. Congress leaders alleged that the ritual amounted to caste-based discrimination because it was conducted after Kharge’s event.
The BJP and those associated with the ritual, however, rejected the allegation and said the exercise was intended to clean and restore the sanctity of the venue.
Rahul Gandhi Demanded FIR Against Those Behind Ritual
Rahul Gandhi had strongly criticised the incident during a press conference in New Delhi on August 29.
He described the alleged purification ritual as a manifestation of “untouchability” and accused the BJP-RSS ideology of being opposed to Dalit progress. Gandhi also urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to ensure that an FIR was registered under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act against those responsible for the ritual.
The issue was subsequently escalated by Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who also called for legal action against those who conducted the ritual.
Complaint Against Rahul Gandhi
According to police and reports, complainant Amit Kumar alleged that Gandhi’s remarks portrayed people associated with the ritual as practising untouchability and being anti-Dalit.
Kumar said he belongs to the Scheduled Caste community and claimed that people from different sections of society, including members of the Scheduled Caste community, had participated in the cleaning and religious activities.
He further alleged that the ritual had no connection with Mallikarjun Kharge’s caste and that Gandhi’s comments wrongly gave the incident a casteist dimension.
BNS and SC/ST Act Sections Invoked
Police have registered the case under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) relating to promoting enmity between groups and deliberate acts intended to outrage religious feelings.
Provisions of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989 have also been invoked, according to police and media reports.
The investigation has been initiated following the complaint, and police are examining the allegations and circumstances surrounding Gandhi’s remarks.
Political Row Intensifies
The FIR has added another layer to an already heated political confrontation between the Congress and BJP.
Congress has maintained that the purification ritual reflected an insulting and discriminatory attitude towards Dalits, while BJP leaders and organisers associated with the event have denied that the ritual was caste-driven.
Those involved in organising the ritual have said the exercise was linked to cleaning and maintaining the sanctity of the public venue rather than targeting any individual or community.
Investigation Underway
The registration of the FIR does not establish guilt, and the allegations against Rahul Gandhi will be subject to investigation and the legal process.
Police are now expected to examine the complaint, Gandhi’s statements, the circumstances surrounding the August 11 ritual and other available evidence before taking further action.
The Haldwani controversy is likely to remain a major political issue, with both Congress and BJP continuing to present sharply different accounts of the incident.
