Bengaluru: The Karnataka government has begun a fresh verification drive for beneficiaries of the Gruha Lakshmi Scheme from Sunday, August 30, 2026. The month-long exercise will involve door-to-door verification, biometric authentication and facial recognition to ensure that financial assistance under the scheme reaches only eligible beneficiaries.
The verification follows concerns over beneficiaries who may have died, migrated or otherwise become ineligible for the scheme. The government has also identified cases where beneficiaries or their husbands subsequently began filing Income Tax or GST returns.
Verification To Cover 1.24 Crore Beneficiaries
The exercise will cover approximately 1.24 crore registered Gruha Lakshmi beneficiaries across Karnataka. According to government figures cited in the re-verification proposal, the scheme has made 32 instalment payments since its launch in August 2023, with total expenditure reaching around ₹76,951 crore.
Under Gruha Lakshmi, eligible women heads of households receive ₹2,000 per month directly into their bank accounts.
How Will The Verification Be Conducted?
Officials will conduct the verification through a combination of doorstep visits and designated service centres.
During the door-to-door exercise, enumerators will visit beneficiaries and provide printed forms for collecting and confirming their details. The verification will also involve biometric and facial authentication through mobile and web applications developed by the Directorate of Electronic Delivery of Citizens Services (EDCS).
The mobile application will be used by enumerators to access beneficiary details. Photographs and location information may also be recorded as part of the verification process.
Beneficiaries can also complete the authentication process through Grama One, Karnataka One, Bengaluru One and CSC (Bapuji Seva Kendras).
What If The Beneficiary Is Not At Home?
If a beneficiary is unavailable when officials visit, the household may be informed about the next steps. Reports indicate that beneficiaries who miss the home visit can complete biometric authentication at designated service points, including Fair Price Shops and Karnataka One, Grama One and Bengaluru One centres.
This is particularly important for beneficiaries who are temporarily away from their homes for work or other reasons.
Why Has Karnataka Ordered Re-Verification?
The government has undertaken the exercise to clean up the beneficiary database and prevent government funds from being paid to people who no longer qualify.
Officials have cited several reasons for the verification, including:
- Deaths of registered beneficiaries
- Beneficiaries who have migrated
- Changes in the beneficiary’s eligibility
- Beneficiaries or their husbands beginning to file Income Tax returns
- Cases involving GST returns
- Other discrepancies in beneficiary records
Earlier reports had highlighted concerns about payments continuing to accounts associated with deceased beneficiaries. The latest exercise is intended to identify such cases and ensure that future payments are restricted to eligible beneficiaries.
₹20 Crore Allocated For Verification
The Karnataka government has approved an expenditure limit of ₹20 crore for the verification exercise.
The Department of Women and Child Development will oversee the operation, while the e-Governance Department will provide technical and operational support. Deputy Commissioners and Zilla Panchayat officials have also been directed to arrange personnel for the field verification.
Will Eligible Women Lose Their ₹2,000 Benefit?
The purpose of the exercise is to remove ineligible beneficiaries, rather than discontinue the Gruha Lakshmi scheme.
Eligible women who successfully complete the verification and continue to meet the scheme’s conditions are expected to remain beneficiaries. However, women whose circumstances have changed or whose records do not meet eligibility requirements could be removed from the beneficiary list.
Beneficiaries should therefore cooperate with the verification process and keep their relevant identification and scheme-related information available when officials arrive.
Gruha Lakshmi Completes Three Years
The verification drive comes as the Gruha Lakshmi scheme completes three years since its launch on August 30, 2023.
The scheme is one of the five major guarantee programmes introduced by the Karnataka government. It was designed to provide direct financial support to women heads of eligible households.
With more than 1.24 crore registered beneficiaries and nearly ₹77,000 crore already disbursed, the government says the latest verification is aimed at improving the accuracy of the beneficiary database and ensuring that public money reaches the intended recipients.
