Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir People’s Democratic Party (PDP) leader Iltija Mufti has been summoned by police in connection with an alleged assault on a police officer during a protest marking the anniversary of the abrogation of Article 370.
According to officials, the incident occurred during a demonstration organized by PDP workers, where protesters attempted to march despite security restrictions. Police alleged that the gathering turned confrontational after participants tried to breach barricades, leading to a scuffle between protesters and security personnel.
Authorities claim that a police officer sustained injuries during the altercation and that a case has been registered under relevant provisions of the law. As part of the ongoing investigation, Iltija Mufti has been asked to appear before the investigating officer for questioning.
Reacting to the summons, the PDP has criticized the move, alleging that it is politically motivated and aimed at suppressing opposition voices in Jammu and Kashmir. Party leaders maintained that the protest was peaceful and accused the administration of using legal measures to intimidate political activists.
Iltija Mufti, daughter of former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti, has been vocal on issues concerning Article 370 and has frequently criticized the Union government’s policies in the Union Territory. She has previously participated in demonstrations demanding the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s special constitutional status and statehood.
The anniversary of the abrogation of Article 370 witnessed heightened security across parts of Jammu and Kashmir, with authorities imposing restrictions in several areas to prevent protests and maintain law and order. Security personnel were deployed at sensitive locations, while political leaders and activists reported restrictions on movement in certain districts.
Police have not disclosed further details regarding the investigation but stated that legal proceedings will continue based on the evidence collected. The case remains under investigation, and no court has determined the allegations against those named.
The development has once again sparked political debate over civil liberties, protest rights, and the handling of dissent in Jammu and Kashmir. Opposition parties have called for a fair and transparent investigation, while authorities have reiterated that the law will take its course irrespective of political affiliation.
