Srinagar, July 31, 2026: A non-local labourer from Chhattisgarh was killed and another was critically injured after terrorists opened fire on them in the Kelam (Kellam) area of Kulgam district in south Kashmir on Friday evening. The victims were working at a brick kiln when they were targeted in what authorities have described as a terror attack. Security forces have since launched a massive search operation to track down the attackers.
Attack at a Brick Kiln
According to officials, terrorists opened fire at two migrant labourers employed at a brick kiln before fleeing the scene. Both victims sustained serious gunshot injuries and were rushed to hospital. One of them, Deepak Ratray (24), a resident of Chhattisgarh, succumbed to his injuries. The second worker, Bhupinder (28), also from Chhattisgarh, remains in critical condition and has been referred for specialized treatment.
Security Forces Launch Search Operation
Following the attack, Jammu and Kashmir Police, along with other security agencies, cordoned off the area and launched an intensive search operation to locate the terrorists responsible. Investigators are examining the circumstances surrounding the targeted attack, while additional security has been deployed across the region.
Lieutenant Governor Condemns the Attack
Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha strongly condemned the attack and expressed condolences to the bereaved family. He stated that he had spoken with senior police officials and directed security forces to intensify operations to bring the perpetrators to justice.
He also assured that the injured labourer is receiving urgent medical treatment and that the administration stands firmly with the affected families.
Growing Concern Over Attacks on Non-Local Workers
The latest incident has once again raised concerns about the safety of migrant workers employed in Jammu and Kashmir. It comes less than two weeks after a police officer was killed in Anantnag and follows previous attacks targeting non-local workers in the Valley. Security agencies remain on high alert as counter-terror operations continue across the region.
Investigation Underway
Authorities are continuing their investigation into the attack, while search operations remain underway in and around Kelam village. No terrorist group had claimed responsibility for the attack at the time of writing. Officials have appealed for calm and assured that every effort is being made to apprehend those responsible.
