Stade (Germany), June 29: At least five people were killed in a shooting near a youth welfare facility in the northern German town of Stade on Monday, prompting a major police operation. Authorities confirmed that a male suspect has been arrested, while a second individual has also been taken into custody as investigators work to determine their possible involvement. The motive behind the attack remains unknown.

The shooting occurred on Dankersstraße in Stade, a town of around 50,000 residents located west of Hamburg. Police quickly sealed off the area and urged the public to avoid the scene while emergency responders and forensic teams carried out their investigation. Officials later stated that there was no ongoing threat to the public.

According to police, all five victims were adults. Several other people were reportedly injured, although authorities have not yet confirmed the exact number or the severity of their injuries. The identities of the victims have not been released pending notification of their families.

Initial reports indicated that the shooting took place near a youth welfare centre that provides supported accommodation for pregnant women, young mothers, and their children. Investigators are examining whether the facility or its occupants were directly connected to the incident.

Police confirmed that one of the two detainees is believed to be the suspected gunman. The role of the second person remains under investigation, and officials have not disclosed further details regarding either individual’s identity. Authorities also said they are not searching for any additional suspects at this stage.

A large contingent of police officers, ambulances, and emergency personnel responded to the scene shortly after reports of gunfire. Witnesses described hearing multiple shots before security forces cordoned off the area and began evacuating nearby residents.

German authorities have launched a full investigation to establish the motive and circumstances surrounding the shooting. Prosecutors are expected to examine forensic evidence, interview witnesses, and review surveillance footage as part of the inquiry. Officials have urged the public not to speculate while the investigation remains ongoing.

The incident is among the deadliest acts of gun violence reported in Germany in recent years. Although the country has relatively strict firearm regulations and mass shootings are uncommon, the tragedy has once again raised concerns over public safety and access to weapons.
