In response to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal for fuel conservation and sustainable urban practices, the Government of Delhi has unveiled a series of major measures, including mandatory work-from-home days, a proposed “No Vehicle Day,” and a special “Metro Monday” initiative.
Under the new plan, government employees in selected departments will be allowed to work from home two days a week in an effort to reduce fuel consumption, traffic congestion, and pollution levels in the national capital. Officials said the hybrid work model will be implemented in phases depending on operational requirements.
The government is also planning a “No Vehicle Day,” during which citizens and officials will be encouraged to avoid using private vehicles and instead opt for public transport, cycling, or walking wherever possible. Authorities believe the initiative could significantly reduce road congestion and emissions if widely adopted.
Another key proposal is “Metro Monday,” aimed at promoting greater use of the Delhi Metro at the start of the work week. Employees and commuters are expected to be encouraged through awareness campaigns and possible incentives to choose metro services over private cars.
Officials stated that the measures are part of a broader campaign focused on sustainability, energy conservation, and environmentally responsible governance. The initiatives also align with efforts to reduce dependence on fuel consumption in densely populated urban areas.
Environmental experts welcomed the move, saying Delhi’s worsening traffic and air pollution problems require long-term behavioural and policy changes. Analysts noted that reducing daily commuting through hybrid work systems could have a measurable impact on fuel demand and carbon emissions.
The announcements have also triggered conversations about whether other states and private companies may adopt similar policies in the future. Several corporate firms had previously implemented hybrid work culture during the pandemic and may now consider continuing flexible work arrangements for environmental and operational benefits.
The Delhi government is expected to release detailed implementation guidelines in the coming days, including department-wise schedules and public awareness campaigns related to the new initiatives.
