13 Glacial Lakes in U’khand Identified as ‘Senstive’; CM Dhami Directs Regular Monitoring

Dehradun: Amid heightened concern over flash floods and glacial hazards in the Himalayan region, 13 glacial lakes in Uttarakhand have been identified as sensitive, prompting Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami to order closer scientific monitoring and stronger disaster preparedness measures.

The move comes days after devastating flash floods in Nepal and the Tibet region highlighted the risks posed by rapidly changing Himalayan landscapes and glacial systems.

CM Dhami Orders Scientific Monitoring

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has directed officials to regularly monitor the identified glacial lakes and conduct comprehensive scientific assessments.

The monitoring will focus on several parameters, including:

  • Water levels in the lakes
  • Changes in lake size
  • The condition of surrounding terrain
  • Potential danger zones
  • Possible impact on downstream communities

Officials have also been instructed to install modern sensors, water-level measuring equipment and advanced communication systems in vulnerable areas.

Early Warning Systems To Be Strengthened

The state government plans to install state-of-the-art Early Warning Systems around sensitive locations so that authorities can receive timely information about unusual changes in water levels or surrounding terrain.

Officials have been asked to increase the number of warning systems wherever necessary.

The objective is to provide sufficient time for authorities to alert residents and initiate evacuation if a glacial lake poses a threat of sudden flooding.

Four Lakes Already Surveyed

Uttarakhand Disaster Management Secretary Vinod Kumar Suman said surveys of four of the 13 sensitive glacial lakes have already been completed.

The remaining lakes will undergo surveys and scientific studies in phases.

Expert teams are also expected to conduct detailed assessments of Saraswati Tal in Chamoli district and Kedartal in Uttarkashi district.

The surveys will examine the present condition of the lakes, water levels, changes in their size, surrounding terrain and potential hazards.

Why Glacial Lakes Can Be Dangerous

Glacial lakes form when meltwater accumulates near glaciers, often behind natural dams made of ice, rock or loose sediment.

If such a natural barrier fails, a sudden release of water can generate what is known as a Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF).

Such floods can travel rapidly downstream, carrying huge quantities of water, rocks, mud and debris. Communities, roads, bridges and hydropower infrastructure located downstream can face serious risks.

The rugged terrain of Uttarakhand makes early detection and rapid evacuation particularly important.

Evacuation Routes And Communication To Be Improved

Dhami has also directed authorities to identify vulnerable locations and strengthen safe evacuation routes, communication networks and local warning mechanisms.

District magistrates have been instructed to regularly monitor potential risk zones and immediately report unusual developments to senior officials.

Relief and rescue preparedness will also be strengthened so that emergency teams can respond quickly if a glacial lake or other Himalayan hazard poses an immediate threat.

Nepal Floods Raise Himalayan Disaster Concerns

The latest precautions in Uttarakhand come against the backdrop of the catastrophic floods that struck Nepal and the Tibet border region.

The Nepal disaster has renewed attention on the risks associated with glaciers, unstable mountain slopes, sudden debris flows and glacial lakes across the Himalayas.

Although the identification of sensitive lakes in Uttarakhand does not mean that a flood is imminent, authorities are seeking to improve preparedness and ensure that potential threats are detected as early as possible.

Local Residents To Receive Safety Training

The government also plans to educate residents living near sensitive areas about possible hazards and the safety measures they should follow during emergencies.

People will be informed about warning signals, evacuation procedures and safer locations so that they can respond quickly if authorities issue an alert.

Focus On Prevention

The Uttarakhand government’s latest measures are aimed at moving from a reactive approach to a more early-warning and prevention-focused disaster management system.

With 13 glacial lakes classified as sensitive, continuous monitoring, modern sensors, reliable communication networks and well-planned evacuation routes could play an important role in reducing risks to communities living downstream.

Officials will continue conducting scientific assessments of the remaining lakes as part of the state’s broader effort to strengthen disaster preparedness across the Himalayan region.
