There may be some relief in sight for Indian consumers as Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri has indicated that petrol and diesel prices could soften in the coming months if the recent decline in global crude oil prices continues. His remarks have raised hopes that motorists may soon benefit from lower fuel costs.

What Did Hardeep Puri Say?

Speaking about the recent correction in international crude oil prices, Minister Hardeep Puri said that oil marketing companies (OMCs) are currently processing expensive crude purchased during the peak of the West Asia crisis. As these inventories are gradually replaced with cheaper crude, the benefit could eventually be passed on to consumers.

According to the minister, it may take around two to three months before the impact of lower global crude prices is reflected at fuel stations.

Why Haven’t Fuel Prices Fallen Yet?

Although international crude prices have eased significantly in recent weeks, retail fuel prices in India have remained largely unchanged. This is because:

  • OMCs are still selling fuel refined from previously purchased higher-cost crude.
  • The companies have absorbed substantial financial losses during periods of global price volatility.
  • Retail fuel pricing also depends on taxes, exchange rates, transportation costs, and inventory management.

Crude Oil Prices Offer Hope

Global crude oil prices have retreated after easing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and improved supply conditions. The decline has strengthened expectations that Indian refiners will soon be able to procure crude at lower prices.

If this trend continues, petrol and diesel prices could witness a downward revision once cheaper crude reaches domestic refineries and existing inventories are exhausted.

Private Retailers Have Already Reduced Prices

Adding to the optimism, Nayara Energy, India’s largest private fuel retailer, has already announced a reduction in fuel prices at its outlets, cutting petrol by ₹5 per litre and diesel by ₹3 per litre. However, state-run oil marketing companies have not yet announced similar reductions.

What Consumers Should Expect

While there is no official announcement of an immediate nationwide price cut, the Petroleum Minister’s remarks suggest that consumers could see some relief if:

  • Global crude oil prices remain stable or continue to decline.
  • Oil marketing companies recover losses incurred during earlier periods of expensive crude purchases.
  • No fresh geopolitical disruptions affect global energy supplies.

Conclusion

The latest comments from Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri indicate cautious optimism for Indian consumers. Although petrol and diesel prices are unlikely to fall immediately, the government believes that lower international crude prices could begin translating into cheaper fuel over the next two to three months, provided global market conditions remain favourable. Until then, motorists will have to wait as oil companies work through their existing high-cost inventories.
