Mumbai witnessed another spell of intense monsoon showers on Friday, leading to widespread waterlogging, traffic congestion, and disruptions to daily life across several parts of the city. After recording around 100 mm of rainfall in a short span, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an Orange Alert, warning residents of continued heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next 24 hours.
Civic authorities have urged citizens to remain cautious, avoid unnecessary travel, and stay updated with official weather advisories.
Heavy Rain Brings City to a Standstill
Persistent rainfall since the early hours inundated several low-lying areas, causing waterlogging on major roads and slowing vehicular movement during peak hours. Commuters faced delays as traffic crawled through flooded stretches in multiple parts of Mumbai.
Municipal teams were deployed to clear clogged drains and pump out accumulated rainwater from affected locations.
IMD Issues Orange Alert
The IMD’s Orange Alert indicates the likelihood of heavy to very heavy rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds in isolated areas. Residents have been advised to stay indoors whenever possible and avoid flooded roads, underpasses, and coastal areas.
Authorities are also monitoring the possibility of high tides, which can worsen waterlogging by slowing the drainage of rainwater into the sea.
Areas Most Affected
Several parts of Mumbai experienced significant water accumulation, including:
- Andheri
- Sion
- Kurla
- Dadar
- Parel
- Bandra
- Hindmata
- Chembur
- Powai
- BKC (Bandra Kurla Complex)
Suburban regions also reported heavy rainfall, resulting in slow-moving traffic and delays in public transport.
Impact on Transport
Heavy rain affected road traffic across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. While local train services continued to operate, some routes experienced minor delays due to reduced visibility and waterlogged tracks in isolated locations.
Motorists were advised to drive slowly, maintain safe distances, and avoid routes prone to flooding.
Civic Authorities on High Alert
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has activated emergency response teams to monitor flood-prone areas, operate pumping stations, and respond to complaints related to waterlogging and fallen trees.
Disaster management teams remain on standby as the city braces for additional rainfall over the weekend.
Safety Advisory for Residents
Authorities have advised citizens to:
- Avoid unnecessary travel during periods of heavy rain.
- Stay away from waterlogged roads and open manholes.
- Keep emergency supplies and mobile phones charged.
- Follow weather updates issued by the IMD and BMC.
- Report flooding, tree falls, or power outages to civic helplines.
Weather Outlook
According to the IMD, Mumbai and adjoining districts, including Thane, Navi Mumbai, and Palghar, are likely to continue receiving moderate to heavy rainfall over the coming days. Residents should remain alert, especially in low-lying and flood-prone areas, as monsoon activity is expected to remain active.
