Brazil produced a dramatic comeback to defeat Japan 2-1 in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32, with substitute Gabriel Martinelli scoring a stoppage-time winner to send the five-time champions into the Round of 16.

Japan stunned the South American giants by taking the lead in the 29th minute when Kaishu Sano capitalised on a defensive error and calmly finished past Brazil goalkeeper Alisson. The Samurai Blue defended resolutely throughout the first half, frustrating Brazil’s star-studded attack.

Brazil emerged with greater urgency after the interval under coach Carlo Ancelotti. Veteran midfielder Casemiro restored parity in the 56th minute, powering home a header from a cross delivered by Gabriel Magalhães to make it 1-1.

As extra time loomed, Brazil continued to press for a winner. Their persistence paid off in the 95th minute when Bruno Guimarães found Martinelli inside the penalty area. The Arsenal winger controlled the ball and fired a shot that beat goalkeeper Zion Suzuki, sparking wild celebrations among the Brazilian players and fans. The goal was one of the latest winning strikes in normal time of a World Cup knockout match.

Japan exited the tournament with heads held high after an outstanding performance that pushed one of the tournament favourites to the limit. However, the defeat meant the Blue Samurai’s wait for a historic first FIFA World Cup knockout-stage victory continues.

Brazil advances to the Round of 16, where Carlo Ancelotti’s side will face the winner of the Ivory Coast vs Norway clash as they continue their quest for a record-extending sixth FIFA World Cup title.
