The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has declared a holiday for all schools in the afternoon session following heavy rainfall across the city and surrounding areas. The decision was taken as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of students, teachers, and school staff amid waterlogging and traffic disruptions caused by continuous downpours.
The civic body has advised schools to suspend afternoon classes and urged parents to avoid unnecessary travel unless weather conditions improve.
Why Were Schools Closed?
Heavy rain since the morning has led to:
- Waterlogging in several low-lying areas.
- Slow-moving traffic on major roads.
- Reduced visibility due to intense rainfall.
- Concerns over student safety during school commute.
Considering the forecast of continued rain, NMMC decided to cancel afternoon classes to minimize risks for school-going children.
Areas Affected
The order applies to schools under the jurisdiction of the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation. Educational institutions have been instructed to inform parents immediately and ensure that students already on campus are safely sent home.
Several parts of Navi Mumbai, including Vashi, Nerul, Belapur, Airoli, Ghansoli, Koparkhairane, Sanpada, and Turbhe, have witnessed heavy showers throughout the day.
Advisory for Parents
The civic administration has requested parents to:
- Stay updated with official NMMC notifications.
- Avoid sending children to schools conducting only afternoon sessions.
- Exercise caution while travelling due to waterlogged roads.
- Contact their respective schools for any changes in schedules.
Rainfall Continues Across Mumbai Region
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast continued rainfall over Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Thane, and nearby districts. Authorities remain on alert as intermittent heavy showers are expected over the next 24 hours.
Residents have been advised to avoid flooded areas, drive carefully, and follow updates issued by local authorities.
Administration Monitoring the Situation
NMMC officials are closely monitoring weather conditions and civic infrastructure, including drainage systems and flood-prone locations. Emergency response teams have been deployed to address waterlogging complaints and ensure smooth traffic movement wherever possible.
Parents and citizens are encouraged to rely only on official announcements for updates regarding school operations and weather-related advisories.
