Ind vs SL Day 5 Prediction: Team India Turn Screw Tight In Galle, Needs 6 Wkt To Win; Sri Lanka Face Uphill

Galle: Team India are firmly in the driver’s seat heading into Day 5 of the first Test against Sri Lanka at the Galle International Stadium. After an action-packed fourth day, Sri Lanka were reduced to 84/4 while chasing a daunting target of 372 runs, leaving India just six wickets away from victory.

Sri Lanka still require 288 runs to pull off a remarkable chase, but India have the advantage of a worn Galle surface, experienced bowlers and considerable scoreboard pressure.

India Put Sri Lanka Under Immense Pressure

India’s second innings was built around an aggressive approach designed to give the bowlers enough time to dismiss Sri Lanka. Rishabh Pant smashed 66 off just 69 balls, including eight fours and two sixes, while Devdutt Padikkal contributed a valuable 44. KL Rahul also scored 35 as India eventually set Sri Lanka a target of 372.

India’s aggressive batting was particularly important because the first two days of the Test had been heavily affected by rain. The visitors needed to score quickly rather than allow the match to drift towards a draw.

Manav Suthar Becomes India’s Key Weapon

Debutant left-arm spinner Manav Suthar has emerged as one of the biggest talking points of the Test.

After taking 4/76 in Sri Lanka’s first innings, Suthar claimed another two wickets in the second innings. His second-innings victims included Pasindu Sooriyabandara and Lahiru Udara, leaving Sri Lanka’s chase in serious trouble.

Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna also picked up wickets as India’s bowling attack quickly dismantled Sri Lanka’s top order.

Dhananjaya de Silva and Sonal Dinusha Hold the Key

Sri Lanka’s hopes now rest heavily on captain Dhananjaya de Silva and first-innings centurion Sonal Dinusha.

De Silva was unbeaten on 31, while Dinusha was not out on 25 when bad light ended play. Their partnership will be crucial when the two teams return on Day 5.

If India can break this partnership early, the remaining Sri Lankan batting order will face an enormous challenge against India’s spinners on a deteriorating pitch.

However, if Sri Lanka’s two overnight batters survive the first session, the pressure could begin to shift back towards India.

Galle History Favours India

Sri Lanka face an enormous statistical challenge. The highest successful Test run chase at Galle is 344, achieved by Pakistan in 2022. A target above 200 has also been successfully chased only twice at the venue since 1998.

Sri Lanka therefore need to produce one of the greatest fourth-innings performances in Galle history to win this match.

Day 5 Prediction: India Heavy Favourites

On current evidence, India are overwhelming favourites to win the Test.

My Day 5 prediction:

India to win by 150+ runs or 5–6 wickets remaining in the innings, depending on how quickly Sri Lanka collapse.

The most likely scenario is that India’s spinners, particularly Manav Suthar and Ravindra Jadeja, will exploit the worn surface and eventually break Sri Lanka’s resistance.

The biggest danger for India is time and weather, rather than Sri Lanka’s required run rate. The match has already lost considerable playing time to rain, making the first session on Day 5 extremely important.

What to Watch on Day 5

  • Dhananjaya de Silva vs India’s spinners
  • Sonal Dinusha’s resistance
  • Manav Suthar’s debut Test and whether he can complete a match-winning performance
  • Ravindra Jadeja’s experience on the turning Galle surface
  • Whether India’s pacers can exploit the conditions
  • Rain and bad light, which remain India’s biggest obstacles

With Sri Lanka needing 288 runs and India requiring only six wickets, the equation strongly favours Shubman Gill’s side.

Prediction: India to win the Galle Test. A Sri Lankan victory would require an extraordinary batting effort on the final day, while a draw would likely depend more on lost playing time than Sri Lanka’s ability to control the match.

This is a pre-Day 5 prediction based on the Day 4 position. Cricket is unpredictable, and weather or an exceptional batting performance can change the result.
