New Delhi, June 29: After enduring several days of scorching temperatures and oppressive humidity, residents across Delhi-NCR finally received much-needed relief on Sunday as thunderstorms, light to moderate rainfall, and strong gusty winds swept through several parts of the region. The sudden change in weather brought down temperatures significantly and improved outdoor conditions after an extended spell of intense heat.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had forecast a spell of light rain accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and strong surface winds for Delhi and adjoining areas. Wind speeds of 30–40 kmph, with gusts reaching up to 50 kmph, were expected during the afternoon and evening, prompting the weather department to issue a Yellow Alert for the national capital and surrounding regions.
Rain Brings Relief From Heatwave Conditions
The rainfall was reported from several parts of Delhi, Noida, Gurugram, Ghaziabad, and Faridabad, offering welcome respite to residents who had been battling temperatures hovering above 40°C in recent days. While some areas witnessed brief but heavy showers, others experienced intermittent rain accompanied by thunder and strong winds.
The showers also helped improve air quality temporarily and lowered daytime temperatures, although humidity levels remained relatively high after the rainfall.
IMD Warns of More Rain Ahead
According to the IMD, monsoon conditions are gradually becoming favourable for further advancement into North India. The weather agency has predicted that intermittent rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds are likely to continue over Delhi-NCR during the next few days as the southwest monsoon progresses across the region.
The broader weather system is expected to bring moderate to heavy rainfall across several northern, eastern, central, and northeastern states over the coming days, signalling a stronger monsoon phase.
Advisory for Residents
Authorities have advised residents to remain cautious during thunderstorms and strong winds. People are encouraged to:
- Avoid taking shelter under isolated trees or temporary structures during lightning.
- Drive carefully as roads may become slippery and waterlogging is possible in low-lying areas.
- Secure loose outdoor objects that could be displaced by strong winds.
- Stay updated through official weather advisories before planning outdoor travel.
Monsoon Set to Gain Momentum
Meteorologists believe the recent spell of rain marks the beginning of a more active monsoon phase over North India. With favourable atmospheric conditions developing, Delhi-NCR is expected to witness more frequent showers in the coming days, bringing sustained relief from the prolonged summer heat while improving overall weather conditions across the region.
